Advantages of Sedation

Being relaxed when a patient visits the dentist is critical for successful outcomes. When patients are anxious or fearful about a treatment, it’s more difficult for our staff to perform their jobs and more difficult for our dentist to successfully complete the treatment you are scheduled to receive.

About 1 in 7 people suffer some form of anxiety when they visit a dentist but not going to the dentist may only create larger dental problems that could eventually have severe consequences for a patient’s oral health and overall well-being.

Dr. Vivek Vij of Burke Parkway Dental has hospital training and is certified to perform the two modalities of sedation that are designed to offer patients an alternative to anxiety-filled visits.

Minimal Sedation (Anxiolysis)

This technique requires patients to arrive an hour before their scheduled procedure. The patient is given a pill that begins the process. The medication makes a patient very relaxed but still able to follow directions and respond to questions. This technique often creates an amnesia that means you won’t remember the procedure.

This sedation technique requires patients to:

  • Be accompanied by a companion or caretaker
  • Possibly receive a mix or oxygen and nitrous oxide depending on sedation needs
  • Recover in a waiting room before they are allowed to leave

Moderate Sedation (Conscious Sedation)

This is a higher form of sedation that will require an intravenous drip to be inserted into the hand and arm. The drip will deliver the medication to the patient. The breathing, blood circulation, and heart activity of the patient will be monitored throughout the procedure. This procedure is highly effective with rapid onset and recovery time and many patients won’t remember the procedure.

This sedation technique requires patients to:

  • Be accompanied by a companion or caretaker
  • Fast (abstain from eating) the night before the procedure
  • Recover in a waiting room before being allowed to leave
